PMU Pigment Expiration & Shelf Life 2026: How Long Does PMU Pigment Last (Unopened vs Opened)

The short answer

A sealed professional PMU pigment lasts 24 months from the manufacture date printed on the bottle. Once opened, the industry standard is 12 months — and that's assuming you store it correctly, never dip a used needle back into the bottle, and never leave the cap off between clients.

If either window has passed, the bottle is retired. Not "used carefully", not "topped up" — retired.

Why PMU pigment expires at all

PMU pigments are suspensions: coloured particles held in a liquid carrier (typically glycerin-free water, witch hazel alternatives, and stabilisers). Three things happen over time:

1. Carrier evaporates. The remaining suspension becomes more concentrated, so a "Medium Brown" bottle at month 20 implants darker than the same bottle did at month 2.
2. Preservatives break down. Anti-microbial agents lose potency. An opened bottle is exposed to airborne bacteria every time you crack the cap.
3. Pigment particles agglomerate. Larger clumps of pigment can't sit at the correct depth. You get patchy heal and unpredictable colour.

None of this is visible in the first month. All of it is happening.

How to read a PMU pigment batch code

A compliant PMU pigment bottle carries four printed fields — if any are missing, don't buy it:

FNS pigments carry all four printed directly on the bottle, plus a matching MSDS accessible by batch number. Cheaper white-label pigments often carry only the expiry date — which is legal in some markets but useless for post-incident traceability.

The 5 signs a bottle is done — throw it out

1. The pigment won't re-suspend after a 60-second vigorous shake. You can see the carrier separated as a clear layer on top.
2. The colour has shifted compared to a fresh bottle of the same shade held next to it. Almost always warmer/darker.
3. The cap is sticky or crusted. Dried pigment on the threads means air has been getting in.
4. Smell has changed. Fresh PMU pigment is nearly odourless. Anything sour, sharp or "off" means microbial growth.
5. The expiry date has passed — even if points 1–4 look fine.

There is no rescue procedure. Adding sterile water doesn't reset the clock, and mixing an old bottle into a fresh one contaminates the fresh one.

Storage: the boring stuff that doubles your shelf life

• Room temperature, out of direct sunlight. UV degrades organic pigment molecules — a bottle stored on a windowsill can shift shade in 6 weeks.
• Upright, cap tight. Sideways storage lets carrier pool in the cap threads and dry there.
• Never in a fridge. Cold shocks cause carrier separation you can't fully reverse.
• Never in a hot car. 40 °C+ for a full day breaks preservatives.

A studio that stores pigment on an open glass shelf in a sunlit treatment room is losing 3–4 months of shelf life per bottle. Move them into a closed drawer.

The workflow that keeps every bottle inside its window

1. On delivery, write the delivery date on the outer box.
2. When you open a bottle, write today's date on the "opened" sticker.
3. Once a month, do a bottle audit: any bottle >12 months since opened, or past expiry, goes in the sharps waste — not the bin, not resale.
4. Order in small quantities. Two 15 ml bottles of a colour you use often is better than one 30 ml bottle you'll still be finishing at month 14.

REACH, MSDS and what regulators actually check

In the EU, UK and increasingly in Southeast Asia, PMU pigments fall under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals). What that means in practice for a working artist:

• Every pigment you use must be REACH compliant — the 2022 restriction banned dozens of colourants previously common in tattoo/PMU inks.
• You must hold the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for every batch on file, matched to the batch code on the bottle.
• In the event of a client reaction, health authorities can request that MSDS. "The supplier said it was fine" is not a defence.
