How saline tattoo removal actually works
Saline removal uses a hypertonic (high-salt) solution implanted into the tattooed layer of skin with a rotary PMU machine — the same pen you use for pigment work, but loaded with a dedicated removal cartridge and sterile saline instead of ink. The salt draws pigment up toward the surface through osmosis, where it lifts off in a scab over the next 7–14 days.
Unlike laser, saline is safe on the eyebrow, lip and eyeliner areas — the wavelengths that break down PMU pigment can also damage hair follicles, meibomian glands, and light tattoo colors that flip to grey or orange under laser heat.

Rule of thumb: if the pigment sits in PMU depth (0.6–1.2 mm) and the area is delicate, use saline. Deep body tattoos and dense black ink still belong to laser.
How many sessions does saline tattoo removal take?
- Microblading removal: 3–6 sessions, 8 weeks apart. Faded work often lifts in 2–3.
- Lip blush removal: 2–4 sessions. Lips push pigment out faster because turnover is quicker.
- Eyeliner removal: 4–8 sessions and only by an experienced remover — orbital swelling is a real risk on the first pass.
- Ombré / powder brows: 4–7 sessions; heavy shading lifts slower than crisp strokes.
Book 8 weeks between sessions. The skin needs a full healing cycle before you can safely re-implant saline in the same tissue.
Aftercare — the 14-day script
- Days 1–3: dry heal only. No water, no ointment, no makeup. The scab has to form dry to pull pigment.
- Days 4–10: the scab lifts on its own. Do not pick it. Picking is the #1 cause of hypopigmentation scars.
- Days 11–14: apply healing balm sparingly. Full SPF 50 on the treated area once healed — sun on fresh saline sites causes long-term discoloration.
- No swimming, sauna, sweating, or retinols for 21 days.
When to refuse a client
- Active cold sores (lip removal is postponed until fully cleared)
- Keloid history — refer to a dermatologist first
- Accutane in the last 12 months
- Freshly done PMU (< 6 months old) — wait for full pigment settlement
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Vitiligo on or near the treatment area
