Best pick by skin type
Which is right for your Fitzpatrick tone?
-
Fitzpatrick I–II
Nano brows or lip blush with cool base
Translucent skin needs the lightest touch and cool undertones.
-
Fitzpatrick III–IV (Asian)
Nano brows or ombré powder, warm-base pigment
Machine-based techniques heal true; microblading blurs on oily Asian skin.
-
Fitzpatrick V–VI
Ombré powder with orange corrector layer
Powder shading + warm corrector prevents ashy grey heal.
What semi-permanent makeup includes
Semi-permanent makeup (SPMU) is an umbrella term for cosmetic tattoos designed to fade gradually over 1–3 years. The three most popular treatments are:
- Brows — microblading, ombre powder, or combination
- Lips — lip blush or full-color lip tint
- Eyeliner — lash line enhancement or full eyeliner
All three use small amounts of cosmetic-grade pigment implanted into the upper skin layer with a fine needle.
How safe is it?
Very safe when done properly. The non-negotiables:
- Licensed artist with local health-department certification
- Single-use, sterile needles (opened in front of you)
- Reputable pigment brands with an ingredient list you can look up
- Patch test 48 hours before if you have allergy history
Risks are low but real: infection, allergic reaction, and poor color migration if the technician goes too deep. All three are almost entirely avoidable with a good studio.
How long does semi-permanent makeup last?
| Treatment | Lifespan |
|---|---|
| Ombre powder brows | 2–4 years |
| Microblading | 12–18 months |
| Lip blush | 2–3 years |
| Eyeliner | 3–5 years |
Fair skin, sun exposure, high-turnover skincare (retinol, AHAs) and oily skin all shorten these numbers.
What should it cost?
A fair worldwide range in 2026:
- US / Canada / EU: $400–$1,200 per treatment
- Hong Kong / Singapore: $500–$1,400
- Southeast Asia: $150–$600
A price that includes the 6–8 week touch-up is the industry standard.
Who should skip SPMU?
Not recommended during pregnancy, active skin infections, uncontrolled diabetes, or while on blood thinners without a doctor's clearance. Anyone prone to keloid scarring should have a patch test first.
